Strikers coach escapes fatal attack

Silver Strikers assistant coach Hellings Mwakasungula was discharged from Kamuzu Central Hospital on Monday after surviving an attack at his Area 36 home in Lilongwe last Monday.

“It was really bad. I do not think it was anything to do with football. These were just thugs. I am just grateful to God that I am alive. During the attack, I could sense that they wanted the worst to happen to me,” Mwakasungula said in a telephone interview Tuesday evening.

According to his friend and neighbour, Christopher Lutere, the thugs attacked Mwakasungula soon after a friend dropped him at his home at around 9pm.

The thugs, who bruised his lips and eyes, stole his wallet and mobile phones.

“In a matter of days, I should be back on my feet and return to work. I am feeling much better. My whole face was bruised and swollen, but I am now getting back in shape,” said Mwakasungula.

Silver lead the TNM Super League standings on 28 points from 12 games. They beat Moyale Barracks 5-2 on Saturday and Bvumbwe Research 2-0 on Sunday at Silver Stadium.
