Submit names of credible monitors—MEC

Listen to this article

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged political parties and all aspiring candidates to submit names of monitors who are credible during the October 7 by-elections.

Speaking during launch of the election at Majaliro Teachers Development Centre in Zgeba Ward, Nyungwe Constituency, Karonga, MEC commissioner Gloria Chingota advised parties and independent candidates to hire monitors who will be able to follow procedures.

“During the May 20 Tripartite Elections, MEC experienced problems with monitors who could not follow what was happening at the polling centres,” said Chingota.

She said, among other anomalies, during the previous elections some monitors did not countersign the results from the polling centres “which means they did not know why they were there in the first place”.

There are by-elections in Zgeba Ward following the death of Lucy Jatto Kalua (independent) two weeks prior to the May 20 polls.
