Sulom clears air on Golden Boot Award

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has announced that the Golden Boot Award will be shared between Big Bullets red hot striker Chiukepo Msowoya and Red Lions marksman Innocent Bokosi.

The two strikers tie at 14 goals apiece after Chiukepo scored a goal in the last game of the season against Civo United on Sunday which Bullets won 3-1.

There were conflicting reports that Chiukepo was credited with the first goal.

However, referee Duncan Lengani credited the goal to Civo’s Richard Chande who aided in Chiukepo’s  header.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda confirmed the development in an interview on Monday.

“The top goal scorer will be announced at the prize presentation ceremony,” Banda said.

“But as of the Sunday game, the goal scorers for Bullets were Chiukepo Msowoya and Mussa Manyenje and an own goal from Richard Chande while Civo’ goal scorer was Gerald Nkungula.”

Chiukepo said he was glad to win the award which he last clinched in 2007 with 17 goals.

“I thank God, my teammates, supporters for their support,” he said. “Without them it would not be possible to achieve this.”

Bokosi, who is expected to join Mozambique side HCB Songo next season, also shared the same sentiments.

The two will share K250 000 (about $384) prize money.
