Sulom dismisses Wanderers proposal

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has shrugged off Mighty Wanderers SMS promotion proposal for being in potential breach of contract with the top flight league’s sponsors, TNM.

Wanderers general secretary Mike Butao confirmed last week that they had wanted the promotion to involve TNM mobile phone subscribers and those for its rival, Airtel.

“We wanted to run the promotion with both networks and asked Sulom for permission, but they said TNM contract does not allow them to do that. In our opinion, we did not see any element of competition [between TNM and Airtel],” explained Butao.

The Nomads feel running the campaign on one network would not translate to K25 million they are targeting to raise from the promotion.

With an annual budget of K50 million, the Nomads want to generate the shortfall of K25 million donation from former president Joyce Banda.

Sulom treasurer Tiya Somba Banda confirmed that general secretary (GS) Williams Banda handled the proposal from the Nomads.

“For more details you can contact the GS, but it is true that the proposal would have been in breach of the contract with TNM. As you may recall, Bullets also wanted to conduct a similar promotion,” explained Somba Banda on Friday.

On Saturday, Banda confirmed rejecting Wanderers’ proposal, noting:

“The agreement recognised TNM as the provider of the service. TNM competitors are not allowed.”

On the way forward in view of Sulom’s stance, Butao said: “We have prizes such as a bus and television sets we bought for the winners and now we are thinking on what to do with the items. We may end up selling them.”
