Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says it will hold elections at its next annual general meeting (AGM) to replace outgoing president Fleetwood Haiya who has ascended to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) presidency.

Haiya defeated Walter Nyamilandu with 23 votes against 13 to end the incumbent’s 19-year reign on Saturday.

Ascended to FAM presidency: Haiya

In response to a question from the media soon after his election on what will happen to his position at Sulom, Haiya said his vice-president Gilbert Mittawa would take over.

But in an interview yesterday, Sulom general secretary Williams Banda clarified that Haiya meant Mittawa would take over in an acting capacity since the league-runners’ constitution states that vacant posts must be filled at the next AGM.

Article 26 of Sulom constitution reads: “A vacancy in the executive committee of Sulom shall occur where there is death, resignation duly communicated to the executive committee in writing, incapacitation, non-attendance of three consecutive meetings without a valid reason or dismissal provided such committee member has been given an opportunity to be heard.

“Should a position become vacant, the executive committee may fill the vacant position until the next general meeting, when a replacement will be elected for the remaining term of the mandate.”

The next AGM will also replace Sulom executive member Daud Mtanthiko who was elected FAM executive member.

On its part, Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) says their vice-chairperson Chawuka Mwasinga will act as chairperson following outgoing chairperson Lameck Zetu Khonje’s election as FAM second vice-president.

In an interview yesterday, Khonje said their constitution states that once the chairperson resigns or is incapacitated, the vice-chairperson takes over in an acting capacity.

“This means my vice-chairperson [Chauka Mwasinga] will take over. It is the same. He is acting until an elective AGM.:

Central Region Football Association (CRFA) is also expected to fill up the position of general secretary Bernard Chiwiriwiri Harawa who was elected FAM executive member at their next AGM.
