Super League in last battles for positions

Blue Eagles will be targeting the runners-up slot as Be Forward Wanderers, Silver Strikers, Azam Tigers and Red Lions wrestle for the third and fourth positions in the final Super League fixtures this afternoon.

Eagles, with 47 points, can displace second placed Mafco, if they beat Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium.

Mafco, having played all their matches, have amassed 50 points and could lose out to Eagles on goal difference.

The runners-up position has a K7 million (about $ 11,097) cheque and Eagles assistant coach Willy Chidati is optimistic they can beat Moyale and win the prize.

Meanwhile, Chidati said their key strikers Schumacher Kuwali and John Malidadi Junior have been ruled out because of injuries.

“We are concerned but not panicking because we have Charles Ngosi and Wister Phiri who are in top form as evidenced by their claiming of two goals over the weekend,” he said.

At Silver Stadium, Silver Strikers will be hoping to seal the fourth spot when they face Tigers.

The Bankers have 43 points and any slip up and victories for Lions, Tigers and Wanderers could see them drop off.

Fifth positioned Wanderers face Red Lions at Kamuzu Stadium and a win for each side would seal a top six finish and an automatic qualification into Standard Bank Knockout Cup.

Lions coach Prichard Mwansa said: “We are determined to win this game and finish in top six.”

Meanwhile, Wanderers technical director Jack Chamangwana hopes that his rejuvenated side will finish the season strongly.

“We have rediscovered our form over the past weeks and we are in a position where we can beat anybody. Our priority is to finish within top six and, if luck is on our side, scoop the fourth slot,” he said.

According to TNM league sponsorship breakdown, champions Bullets will pocket K15 million (about $23,780), runners-up will receive K7 million, third place is valued at K4 million (about $6,341) while fourth-placed outfit will rake in K3.5 million (about $5,548).

The Super League season is expected to close down on Sunday with champions Bullets facing Civo, who are on position nine. n
