Superior Foods Group of companies has agreed to sponsor three rugby competitions to the tune of K3 million (US$6 667) for the 2015/16 season, starting this November.

Rugby Football Union of Malawi (Rfum) has announced the doubling of the sponsorship following an agreement reached with the food suppliers in Blantyre on Tuesday.

The agreement has since led to the birth of Superior Foods National Rugby League. The league was previously only being played in the Southern Region.

“The agreement was reached between Esa Arab of Superior Foods and directors of Rfum.

“In effect, the Superior Foods National Rugby League, the Under-20 rugby championship as well as three 7s tournaments will now have one sponsor, namely Superior Foods,” Rfum’s statement stated.

“The exciting news for rugby fans regarding the new season is that teams based in Lilongwe will now be part of the national championship and the 7s tournaments.

“This development will see rugby grow exponentially with one team in the Southern Region and four new teams from the Central Region joining the battle for top Malawian rugby team.”

Rfum director of leagues Yuk Yen Auyeng noted that the sponsorship will enhance professionalism in rugby.
