Support the police, residents asked

Malawi Police Commissioner for the South, Rodney Kanyama, has urged chiefs to mobilise their subjects and construct staff houses at police units if they want the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to deploy more officers in their areas.

He was speaking at the weekend at Mkumaniza Community Support Unit in Traditional Authority Ngabu in Chikhwawa during the handover of 10 bicycles and community policing kits. The items were bought by a Scottish national, Andy Walker, who also built the unit.

“For us to send you more officers they need to be accommodated and as such, we urge you to build staff houses. The police should communicate with community and this is viable only when they live around you,” he said.

He advised police officers to be non-partisan.

“Do not engage in corrupt practices so that the people you serve should have trust in you,” he said.

Group village head Mkumaniza said the bicycles will help volunteers in monitoring the area.

“These bicycles donated today should not be used for your personal errands, especially transporting merchandise to and from Mozambique,” he said.
