Surestream FC ‘disbands’

In a dramatic twist to the Surestream FC ownership wrangle, Surestream Petroleum Limited management yesterday halted operations of both the team and academy.

Surestream management, through public relations manager Linda Chiume-Gombera, is reported to have told the players and technical staff to stop reporting for training until further notice.

This comes in the wake of the team’s ownership battle between Surestream and their former technical director Peter Mponda.

It is also very unlikely that they will fulfil their TNM Super League match against fellow rookies Mzuni scheduled for Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo this afternoon.

Chiume-Gombera yesterday confirmed that the move is temporary until the confusion surrounding the ownership is addressed.

“Peter claims that since he registered the club, then he owns it and we wouldn’t want to create unnecessary confusion whereby Peter might also turn up at the match. We had a preliminary meeting over the issue yesterday [Thursday] and discussions are on-going.

“So, until the issue is resolved, we have asked the players to stop reporting for training. As for tomorrow’s [today’s] match, we have asked Sulom to consider postponing it,” said Chiume-Gombera.

However, Sulom treasurer Tiya Somba-Banda said he does not see why Surestream has taken that route.

“I think it is an issue that can be sorted out amicably. They said their concern was that Peter would turn up and sit on the bench, but we told them that if he resigned then he cannot.

“They also suggested a postponement, but we told them that it was too late considering that Mzuni were already on their way from Mzuzu. So, in as far as we are concerned, the game is on,” said Somba-Banda.

Mponda yesterday refused to comment.

Mponda’s saga took a new twist after his resignation when it was established that the club was registered in his name. According at the Registrar of Companies, the former Flames captain registered the club as his under registration certificate 177808.

Surestream are currently lying second from the bottom in the 15-team league with three points from eight games.
