Synod wants to use K75m ‘idle’ govt donation

Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) has asked government to authorise it to use a K75 million donation made in 2011 but has been idle in the synod’s bank account.

Government gave the synod the funds to construct a modern female students’ hostel at University of Livingstonia as per the pledge of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika after visiting the college in 2007.

The former president pledged government’s commitment to finance the 100-room hostel, according to the synod.

Livingstonia Synod general secretary the Reverend Levi Nyondo said in an interview on Monday that government later asked the institution to pend the project until additional funds were provided.

He said the synod was seeking a go-ahead from government to use the money in the account to engage contractors for the project.

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology spokesperson Manfred Ndovi said he needed to check the agreement and what is the current stand of government before commenting. n
