The Northern Region Cricket Board has organised a five-week tournament, which will kick off today at Katoto Primary School ground in Mzuzu.

Four teams have registered for the tournament.

According to Northern Region Cricket Board member Tansifbaig Mirza, the tournament will mark the official launch of the game in the region.

“We want players even from the North in our national cricket team. It is obvious that we can also secure good players in Mzuzu and that is what the tournament wants to achieve,” he said.

Mirza noted that cricket tournaments are at the moment played only in Lilongwe and Blantyre.

“Cricket is one of the most watched sport in the world. It is important that it should be played nationwide,” he said.

The tournament is sponsored by T and T Drilling Company.

“Currently, we only have T and T Drilling Company sponsoring us. But we still need other companies to come in as we invite more local teams to join the competition,” said Mirza.

The four teams that have confirmed participation are Tsunami Eleven, Kings Eleven, Mzuzu Repowering and Happy Eleven.

According to Mirza, trophies will be given to the winning teams.

“Apart from giving trophies to the winning teams, we will also have individual prizes,” he said. n
