TBAs still delivering women—Maikhanda

Maikhanda, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) promoting safe motherhood, has expressed concern over traditional birth attendants (TBAs) still delivering women in homes.

The organisation this week withdrew two pregnant women aged 15 and 20, who had been taken to a TBA in Kachitsa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kambwiri in Salima.

In an interview, Maikhanda trust coordinator for Salima, Maria Moyo, said despite government banning delivery at TBAs, there are still people acting to the contrary.

“We took them to Salima District Hospital where the younger mother delivered by Caesarean section,” said Moyo.

She said time had come for TBAs to refer cases to hospitals for professional assistance.
