Teachers need to work together—Kalekeni

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) general secretary Dennis Kalekeni says teachers need to work together to curb various challenges they face.

Kalekeni made the call at Mzimba Teachers Sacco 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday in Mzuzu.

Kalekeni said the conduct of teachers to organise demonstrations without proper communication to TUM or within themselves is the main reason their concerns are not taken seriously.

“You will find that teachers are boycotting classes, but some teachers will still go to class and teach, how will people take your views seriously?” wondered Kalekeni.

Kalekeni also said many teachers are reluctant to save their money in Sacco because their salaries are not enough. Kalekeni said TUM will fight for better working conditions of teachers such as salary increment.

He thanked Mzimba Teachers Sacco for its success because it extended into other districts such as Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota, Kasungu and Mzuzu City, saying it is the largest Sacco in the country.

In his remarks, Mzimba Teachers Sacco president Kennedy Moyo said the Sacco has helped many teachers through loans.

He, however, said government owes the Sacco over K80 million, a factor which is affecting its operations.

“The government deducts money from our members salaries, but does not give us the money and this is affecting our service delivery,” said Moyo.
