Teams set to beef up

Some TNM Super League clubs say they are set to beef up their squads as the mid-season transfer window opens tomorrow.

Football Association of Malawi club licensing and compliance manager Casper Jangale said in an interview yesterday that the window will be open up to August 30.

“That is enough time for teams to negotiate and conclude deals and it is our expectation that procedures will be followed,” he said.

Pace-setters Silver Strikers are not sitting on their laurels despite a 12-point lead at the summit of the 16-team top-flight and have confirmed that they will invade the market to sign some new players as proposed by their Peter Mponda-led technical panel.

Silver comfortably lead the table but still want to beef up squad

The Bankers’ chief executive officer (CEO) Patrick Chimimba in an interview yesterday said: “As we committed to supporting the coach in the best possible way this season, we have made huge strides in our discussions with teams and player managers from our wish list.

“So, yes, we will definitely have additions in this transfer window.”

Mponda has proposed a defending midfielder, attacking midfielder and an attacker.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored side finished the first round unbeaten with 37 points. They dropped eight points in draws against PremierBet Dedza Dynamos, Mighty Wakawaka Tigers, Kamuzu Barracks and Moyale Barracks.

However, the Area 47-based side was booted out of the FDH Bank Cup at the first hurdle on post-match penalties by second-tier side Blue Eagles.

Second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have also hinted at beefing their squad.

The Nomads’ CEO Panganeni Ndovi said: “So far, we are awaiting the final first round report from the technical panel where we will get recommendations for which areas to beef up in the squad.

“Observably, there are some departments that need additions, but that is for the technical panel to decide to ensure that we have a squad that will focus on competing for trophies.”

Third-placed Mzuzu City Hammers also say they will strengthen their squad.

The club’s patron Gift Mkandawire said: “We will definitely make additions, but for us, we don’t target already established players. Our focus is lower leagues.”

FCB Nyasa Bullets, who lie sixth on the log, said they are yet to meet on the issue.

The People’s Team acting chief executive officer Albert Chigoga said: “Once it is established that we need to reinforce, we will talk about it.”

Table-anchors Baka City FC say they want to strengthen their defence and striking force.

The Karonga-based side’s general secretary Alfred Zungu said in an interview yesterday that they believe they can survive relegation if they sign good defenders and strikers.

“Our weakest link is in central defence and we are also struggling to score goals. Otherwise, in the other areas, we are OK,” he said.

Rookies Creck Sporting Club have said they are looking at signing a defender, two midfielders and a striker.

The team’s board chairperson Muhammad Selemani said in an interview yesterday: “Our priority is to rope in defender Chris Liwemba from Chitipa United and once the transfer window opens, we’ll be out to finalise the deal, then we can look at the other areas.”
