Temwa sets new record in us

US-based Malawian female football star Temwa Chawinga yesterday set a new record, becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive matches in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

She scored the priceless goal as her team Kansas City (KC) Current lost 2-1 to North Carolina Courage.

According to Kansascity.com, the Scorchers striker put the visitors in the lead in the 62nd minute with a simple, but classic finish after rounding off North Carolina’s goalkeeper.

However, the hosts pulled level five minutes later before snatching the winner in added time.

It was the first time that KC Current have suffered back-to-back losses.

In an interview yesterday, Temwa said it was an afternoon of mixed fortunes for her.

Said the 2023 overall world top scorer: “Feels great to set a new scoring record, but we have lost two consecutive matches and it just doesn’t feel good

‘We need to pick ourselves up.”

Temwa tops the scorers chart with 14 goals, two more than fellow African Barbra Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride.

KC Current are third in 14-team US women’s top-flight with 35 points from 18 matches, nine points behind leaders Orlando Pride and three points below second-placed Washington.

KC Current coach Vlatko Andonovski rued his team’s missed chances.

He was quoted as having said: “We need to take care of games and score goals with the opportunities we create.”
