Temwa stamps authority in US Women’s league

US-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga’s six goals scored in June outscored 10 clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League.

 According to the league’s website nwslsoccer.com, the  Scorchers forward also scored in all the four matches she played, “which was an incredible feat”.

Overall, Temwa’s six goals included two braces and she spiced up her stellar show with two assists, leading to the Player of the Month Award.

“Chawinga’s current tally of 12 goals is her club’s  [Kansas City Current] record for goals scored in a single season by a player with 10 more league matches to play,” reads a statement on the website

She is currently the league’s joint leading scorer with Zambian Barbra Banda of Orlando Pride.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old has also been named in the league’s Best XI for June.

In an interview yesterday, Temwa said she is flattered by her record.

She said: “I believe it can only get better. All this is happening because of the support I get from my teammates.

“It’s all about team spirit and we will continue working for each other.”

National Women’s Football Association chairperson Adellaide Migogo said: “It is amazing how Temwa has taken the US women’s top league by storm. She is flying the country’s flag high and we are proud of her.’

Kansas City Current are second in the 14-team league with 35 points from 16 matches, three points short of leaders Orlando Pride, who handed them their first defeat last week.
