Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (Tevet) graduates are reportedly shunning bank loans that can enable them start businesses.

Tevet regional manager for the North Nyamazao Bamusi made the observation on Thursday during a graduation ceremony of 31 youths who have undergone vocational training at Mpamba Youth Vocational Training Centre in Nkhata Bay.

She said her organisation set up a programme with Opportunity Bank of Malawi (OBM) to enable Tevet graduates access loans using their certificate as collateral.

He, however, said it was surprising to notice that the programme is not bearing fruit as graduates are not applying for the loans.

“I challenge you to go to the bank and access the loans. If they tun you down, come and report to our offices,” said Bamusi.

Tevet, with support from World Vision Malawi (WVM) trained the students for six months in tinsmith, bricklaying and tailoring.

Nkhata Bay District Commissioner Fred Movete advised the graduates to use their skills in developing respective localities.

WVM pumpedK7.7 million into the training programme.

  1. Teveta can you be serious please and stop wasting money. Can tinsmith and tailoring develop this country? Why not put the 7.7 million to good use: teach the students fish or pautry farming b) biogas plant making-so easy I made one functional one myself-so they can produce gas for cooking in households and liquid mature for the fieds, apple or tangerine grafting and farming….then juice making. All these are more money making and progressive activities than tailoring. 50 kwacha per chigamba tipita nazo kuti abale. And people at WVM do not just give money because the activity is in your region, think carefully about returns on your investment.
