Teveta takes vocational skills to rural parts of Chitipa

Technical Entrepreneurial Vocational Education and Training Authority (Teveta) has reiterated that equipping rural young Malawians with vital skills is pivotal for the country’s economic growth.

Teveta executive director Ndione Chauluka made the remarks on Friday when he presented furniture and other training tools to Kasama Skills Development Centre in Mwaulambia, Chitipa.

“Acquisition of vocational skills by the youth is key in promoting sustainable economic growth at both community and national levels,” said Chauluka.

He said when the youth have relevant vocational skills, they have the capacity to start their own businesses and create jobs in their localities.

Teveta, with funding from World Bank, has established a skills development centre at Kasama Tobacco Estate with the potential to upgrade it into a community technical college.

During the Teveta Work Suit Day, the authority planted 1000 trees at the centre in aid of those willing to venture into apiculture and carpentry.

The centre was officially launched five months ago under the Tevet Improvement Plan (TIP).

It currently admits informal sector trainees to rehabilitate the abandoned structures while acquiring skills in tailoring, carpentry and joinery, apiculture, bricklaying and electrical installation. n
