Just a Coincidence

The ‘King of Scotland’ was right?

Let me start by encouraging you that if you have time to spare, take some time to read a fiction book like I did this part week. I read a small book for children. This book is titled The Angel who Wore Shoes and was written by Dan Fulani and (the book) published by Heinemann.

The main character in this book was Tanko who was lazy, described as clever but also evil. Then there was the second character, Gumi, who was not described as not that clever but was hard working. The story is such that Tanko never paid attention to his pumpkin plant which later withered and died. Gumi cared for his pumpkin plant. Tanko went to steal his friend’s (let me call them neighbours and not friends, shall we?) pumpkin at night. The pumpkins were hanging on the roof.

In the event, he fell through the grass-thatched roof onto Gumi’s bed. Tanko asked Gumi (and his wife) to close their eyes and he robbed them. The story ends with Tanko being arrested for robbing his neighbour, and perhaps trespassing, disturbing the peace and other charges.

I was at the bank the other day. As I waited to get the cheque I presented cleared, my eyes roamed the different posters and notices that hang on the wall of this blue bank. The schedule for currency conversions attracted my attention. There were no rates displayed for that day but the foreign currencies that this bank cared for were displayed on the board. There was the United States dollar. This was important, was it not? Then there was the Euro. I agreed. This was a major currency that we needed to pay attention to.

Then, came the British Pound. Well, I thought what would we have if Scotland were to secede from the United Kingdom as some are agitating? Well, I thought how ironic these past years have been. President Idi Amin made himself King of Scotland. At the time, he was encouraging Scotland to secede from the United kingdom. People laughed and described the idea as stupid. Some 35 years on, and we have the people of Scotland doing exactly what Amin was asking them to do, i.e. become an independent country. Of course, you have started thinking what is the difference between the Scottish referendum and the referendum that the people of Crimea have had? I do not know. What is the difference between the referendum to separate that the Scottish and that which the people of Catalonia in Spain want? I also do not know. What I know is that Scotland could be a separate country before the end of the year and things could become very complicated for them.

There is an interesting parliamentary election battle in Blantyre Kabula Constituency this year. There is billionaire Rashid Gaffar on the ballot, then former deputy minister and MP Jaap Sonke and recent MP Njawala. Someone told me the outcome will be similar to the national (presidential vote). What I learned from this was that if Njawala wins, JB will win. If Sonke wins, Muluzi wins and if Rashy (Rashid) wins, Peter wins.
