The Red-Li Mipuniro Project organises two day workshop

The Red-Li Mipuniro Project yesterday organised a two day workshop for athletes from different sports disciplines in order to equip them with sportsmanship and leadership skills that they can exhibit both on and off the field. The training, which took place at Bingu International Stadium (BNS) was sponsored by the Anita White Fund through the International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sports.

The training comes after several outcries from different sports bodies on the need for refresher training on sportsmanship and leadership amongst the athletes. Technical officer for Olympa Africa James Mangani, said the training is a positive initiative to not only safeguard sports in Malawi but also shape and guard it.

“It’s important now and then to reflect where we are coming from and where we want to go and such trainings are a very important tool. We are grateful to the Anita White Fund for this opportunity and we hope such initiatives will continue,” he said.

During the sessions, the athletes were trained on safeguarding and sports for development; aspects of fair play; respect for opponents. “Displaying good sportsmanship, even in the heat of competition, sets a positive example and helps to nurture an environment of mutual respect between challengers, co-players, coaches and officials, and this is what we want to promote- An environment where people can freely express themselves and be themselves while helping others,” he said.

Chairperson of Malawi Volleyball Referees Commission, Fanney Kanyenda said athletes have a lot to learn from such trainings not only for their growth but also for their self-respect.  Kanyenda said good behaviour in sports is essential and must be guarded.

“By being a good sport, you learn respect for others and self-control. These skills can help you even when you’re not competing. They can also help you in your friendships and in other environments. The emphasis on sportsmanship not only fosters solidarity among competitors but also builds their self-character. People who exhibit integrity, humility, and respect for others inspire trust and admiration. This fosters a positive and inclusive environment conducive to success,” she said.

The Red-Li Mipuniro Project which is being headed by Paida Mpaso is one of the 20 receipts of the Anita White Fund. The funding has been made available to enable women who have successfully completed leadership programmes to advance the women and sport movement in their countries, regions or organisations. This fund is to honour Dr Anita White’s leadership of the international women and sport movement and her role in establishing the IWG.
