There are no free lunches in town

Listen to this article

Many times, we all want to start on wellness. Few people want or will accept humble beginnings. Many, when offered a job in the lower ranks will whine and brag that their years in school did not determine such a small offer. They will decline and opt to wait at home while trying to fish for the biggest catch. Sadly, this may not always pan out as planned. But that humble begging may just be the breakthrough that most of us need.

And because of this overrated mentality, some will jump from one place to the other in search of the so-called greener pastures. For such minds, getting settled means a bigger purse regardless of where it is obtained. If one opportunity offers more, they do not hesitate to abandon ship for the next one. Growth is good and encouraged, but instability can cause problems.

Reading the cover story on Constance Govati, it is inspiring to learn how resilience ushered her through 26 years within the corridors of Plan International Malawi. It is not every day you meet someone who has worked for an organisation for so long.  With challenges, many opt out and keep searching. What we forget is that vey organisation has issues, no matter how green it looks.

The same applies for relationships. Many, especially women, over work their expectation in search of a prince charming, bread winner, support system and fairly tale romance. An entire package, including uncompromised financial support and a man that will spoil them to pieces is what many women dream of. Some even expect their man to have it all when he meets them. If a man is picking himself up, they reject him in search of an established one.

Putting unrealistic expectations may be farfetched. Many of the young men and women searching for partners have potential and will make it in life. If they are in the course of it, it doesn’t make them failures. Why not join the boat and work towards success together? Even if they are already established, there will be a part to be played by everyone. Even those stay at home wives and mothers do their parts, toiling and making themselves useful.

So, everything must begin somewhere. You cannot become a general manager, chief executive officer from the blue. Everyone needs to learn and work their ways up the ladders. We cannot just wake up to become that wife who drives her way through shopping malls without reasoning, resilience or patience. If we patiently go through school corridors for our goals, why not other aspects of our lives? There are no free lunches in town.
