Thyolo to have K598m upstairs primary school

Thyolo District Council is set to construct a one-storey school block at a cost of K598.7 million with funds from the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) Project.

The school will be named Thyolo Boma Primary School and will be built in group village head Chibwana, Traditional Authority Nchilamwera.

In an interview on the sidelines of a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Thyolo Central legislator Ben Phiri said the school will increase enrolment.

“The school will also reduce the distance that learners travel to school,” he said.

In a separate interview, Thyolo district commissioner Hudson Kuphanga said the school will also reduce congestion.

“As a council, we will see to it that the construction of the primary school takes place within the planned timeframe,” he said.

Thyolo District Council chairperson Petro Charles Bowman said the school will enhance quality education in the district.

According to the project document, the construction works will include one-storey school block with four classrooms each accommodating 60 desks.

The construction works will also include two latrines for learners and two teachers’ houses.

According to Thyolo District Education Office, the district has 211 331 learners against 1 813 classrooms, translating to a pupil to classroom ratio of 117:1.

The project is set to be completed in December 2024.
