Time running out on CRWB K1.1 trillion projects

Central Region Water Board (CRWB) has said it is working with Treasury to identify $683 million (about K1.1 trillion) for its water projects.

In its five-year strategic plan, ending 2026, the board planned to carry out various water projects to supply people with clean water.

Makwenda: Government has shown commitment

Speaking in an interview on Saturday in Salima, where the board organised a hike and connect event to promote a good working relationship with its clients, CRWB chief executive officer John Makwenda said government has already helped the board in securing 17 percent of the funds and the board is now working with Treasury on covering the gap.

“We are happy that there are some new innovative ways of financing projects that the Ministry of Finance is guiding us on and very soon we expect to put up even more projects,” he said.

The CEO said apart from the secured funds, the board is expecting $31 million for expansion of the Salima town water supply system.

He added that the board is also counting on the Salima-Lilongwe water project to narrow the gap in resources.

Ministry of Finance spokesperson William Banda said the Treasury is aware of the strategic and financial needs of the water sector.

“Treasury will work to mobilise resources for the development,” he said.

CRWB in its strategic plan starting from 2021 to 2026 identified 16 major water supply infrastructural projects.
