TNM non-committal on sponsorship

TNM sponsorship manager Wilma Chalulu was non-committal on their K60 million (about $359 281) annual three-year Super League sponsorship, which has run its course.

“What we agreed with the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) was that the prize presentation will be on February 10 2012 in Lilongwe. As for the issue of sponsorship, we sit down at the end of the season, do a post-mortem, then make our position known,” she said.

TNM took over the league in 2006 and renewed the sponsorship for another three years in 2009.

Chalulu said the sponsors were thrilled by a great spectacle that climaxed on Saturday with Silver’s 1-0 win over Escom United at Kamuzu Stadium.

Chalulu was among the decent crowd that on an eventful sunny afternoon witnessed Silver outsmart Escom through Rodrick Gonani’s early strike to seal the title on 48 points.

“It was an exciting season in which the winner was unknown until the very last whistle,” said Chalulu.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda hoped that the seemingly improved displays, the drama and suspense would encourage the sponsors to pump in more money.

He said it was only logical that the prize presentation be held closer to where the champions designate fans come from.

Silver caretaker coaching panel member, Hellings Mwakasungula has since dedicated the championship to their fans.
