Transport sector union in membership campaign

The Transport and General Workers Union will today launch a three-day membership campaign aimed at reaching out to transport sector workers who are not registered.

The campaign is expected to be conducted at Wenela Bus Depot in Blantyre and Lilongwe Bus Depot.

Minibus_parkedDuring a press briefing held at Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) on Monday, Transport and General Workers Union of Malawi general secretary, Ronald Mbewe, said workers in the sector are victimised at their workplaces, hence the need for them to join the union.

“We can testify this by the number of complaints we receive even from unregistered workers. This prompted us to target these people because by joining the union, members are able to exercise their rights at their respective workplaces,” said Mbewe.

He added that the campaign is a challenge since the structure of the transport sector is informal as most transport firms are family businesses.

According to Mbewe, the union is expected to have a second phase of the campaign from August 6 to 8, targeting truck drivers in the border posts of Mwanza, Dedza and other busy trading centres nationwide.
