Malawi and four other African countries will benefit from the United Kingdom (UK) Government’s 18 million pound sterling (about K36 billion) support for grass roots women’s rights organisations as part of 16 Days of Activism.

UK Development International Minister Andrew Mitchell announced the support in London this week.

The other beneficiaries are India, Pakistan, Somalia, Eswatini, Uganda and Madagascar.

The statement issued yesterday said the first round of successful grantees under the ‘What works to prevent violence: Impact at scale’ programme will implement innovative, locally-led approaches that focus on the most marginalised women to drive down violence in homes, schools, universities as well as workplaces.

Mitchell noted that similar support in 2022 reached out to over 400 000 women and girls.

Ritchie: One in three women experience violence

“We are stepping up our support for grass roots organisations in more than 70 countries around the world and new funding will go towards tackling gender-based violence to help empower women and girls everywhere,” he said.

British High Commissioner Fiona Ritchie observed that one in three women experience violence in their lifetime but gender-based violence is preventable.

She said: “Together we can prevent all violence against women and girls. With this new funding, which targets organisations on the frontline of tackling violence against women and girls, the UK is proud to mark the annual 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence.
