Following the cancellation of the friendly match against Lesotho, Malawi Under-20 national soccer team has intensified preparations by playing local teams.

At the weekend, the Junior Flames beat Mighty Wanderers 2-1 before playing out a 2-2 draw against Azam Tigers.

Both matches were played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

In the match against the Nomads, the Junior Flames led 1-0 at interval through Chawanangwa Kawonga’s strike before Nomads’ Mike Kaziputa levelled the score and Mark Fodya struck the winner for the Under-20.

On Saturday, the Junior Flames twice came from behind to hold Kau-Kau.

The Under-20s are preparing for Saturday’s Africa Youth Championship final qualification round, first leg against Zambia at Kamuzu Stadium.

James Sangala and Peter Katsonga were on target for Tigers whereas Patrick Phiri and Fodya replied for the national side.

Junior Flames coach Ernest Mtawali said while the Lesotho friendly could have been the perfect match to test his charges’ strength, he was happy with their performance.

“It is different playing against a team that is not within the age-range,” said Mtawali.
