The Under-20 national soccer team has been rewarded with a 150 percent game bonus increase by FAM in appreciation for qualifying for the CAF Youth Championship second-round.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu announced the good news yesterday during a press briefing he jointly addressed with the team’s coach Ernest Mtawali at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Limbe.

For a win, the Junior Flames normally get K15 000 each from government, but as a token of appreciation FAM has pledged an extra K30 000 each.

“I promised that we would reward the players if they qualified into the next round. For us to achieve our desired goals, we need to motivate the players,” said Nyamilandu.

Nyamilandu also hailed Mtawali and his backroom staff for defying the odds to win the crucial match away in Gaborone on 3-2 aggregate.

“There were some people that were probably not sure of your [Mtawali] capabilities and I have no doubt we have the right man.

“Under your tutelage, I have noted good team spirit, no-nonsense attitude and that you are a goal-getter and result-oriented. You have the right values that are trickling down to the players,” said Nyamilandu.

The team is supposed to regroup today ahead of the second-round first leg against DRC here on May 10 and the FAM president said the team will still go into camp as they await government funding.

Mtawali has said they will be to concentrate on their strengths, devise a proper game plan and not worry much about the opponents they know nothing about.

The following are the 25 players called into camp: Goalkeepers: Bright Munthali, Dalitso Makunganya and Enock Matangazira; Defenders: Trevor Kalema, Miracle Gabeya, Boston Kabango, Swedi Limbani, Mark Fodya, Stanely Sanudi, Lovemore Jere and Levison Maganizo; Midfielders: Mathias Nyirenda, Ben Manyozo, Ernest Tambe, Isaac Mwale, Isaac Kaliati, Abraham Kamwendo, Thokozani Harrison, Peter Chembezi and Dalitso Sailesi; Strikers: Khumbo Ng’ambi, Chawanangwa Kaonga, Precious Msosa, Wongani Kuzisanja and Vincent Chavi.
