Ung’onoung’ono’s DRC

Listen to this article

The focus last week was on the tripartite elections and the mood was electric. On a chilly Wednesday morning, I overheard a conversation between two, in their early 70s. One of them, smoking chingambwe, was quite talkative and seemed to call the shots over the other. He baldly declared: “N’jomba zotsatirazi zivuta, amayi ati akukatenga conjunction ku khothi.” Apparently, he meant ‘injunction’. It was one of the lighter moments of the elections.

The song Mbewa zanga became a hit on the local scene not long ago and one naughty chap had the cheek to do a ‘remix’ of that song, insinuating that the remix had been performed by JB who felt betrayed by Malawians and was demanding back the cows she donated to them. Then the game of football demonstrated its beauty and power when it unified people from the different camps after the Malawi Under-20 national soccer team beat DR Congo 2-0 on Friday evening.

Suddenly, there were refreshing postings, sweet to the eye, hailing Ernest Mtawali and his troops for a job well done. And those whose hopefuls fell by the way side in the elections, found comfort in our boys’ triumph and it felt really good. Ung’ono, ung’ono koma umenewu! Glory be to God. Uloliwe..Uloliwe wayidudula hii…Neng’asiza [The train is pushing].
