Malawi’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology Eunice Kazembe says government will promote some teachers who failed recent interviews that saw 5 099 of 24 000 applicants across the country getting promoted.

Kazembe said this at a press conference in Lilongwe on Sunday amid threats from some teachers to down tools this week for not being promoted.

She said the 5 099 teachers have been promoted from Grade PT4 to PT3, adding government will still promote some of the teachers who have failed in the interviews on the basis of the number of years service.

“These teachers have been promoted based on interviews. The selection was based on performance. There are some who have failed the interviews but will not just be left out. We have about 4 000 positions at PT3 where to promote those who have been at one grade for a long time but did not pass the interview,” said Kazembe.

She said the ministry also has 649 positions at Grade P8 for head teachers, 1 588 positions at Grade PT1 and 3 874 positions at Grade PT2 where she said more teachers will be promoted.

“The ministry intends to release a second phase of the results of the interviews. Apart from merit, selection of successful candidates in the second phase will prioritise teachers who have served for a long time. The results will be released as soon as all appropriate processes have been finalised,” said Kazembe.

The teachers’ promotions follow President Joyce Banda’s administration commitment to promote about 11 200 teachers this year after many years of non-promotion in the teaching service.
