UTM Party and the National Advocacy Platform (NAP) have called for the arrest and prosecution of thugs who attacked Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members in Lilongwe on Saturday.

The two entities said in separate statements issued on Saturday evening that Malawians deserve a political landscape free from violence and that growing cases of political violence threaten democracy.

In its statement signed by national publicity secretary Felix Njawala, UTM Party said the attack on DPP members appeared to have been premeditated and coordinated by individuals with connections and resources; hence, the need for the full force of the law to take its course.

Reads the statement in part: “We insist on unbiased action, without fear or favour, and no sacred cows hidden from public scrutiny.”

UTM Party said it strongly condemns the violence and expressed concern that Malawi is witnessing a deterioration of order and sanity on its political landscape.

“This alarming trend, particularly with upcoming elections in the next 19 months, must be decisively addressed by those entrusted with maintaining law and order. Failure to do so could plunge Malawi into the unfortunate category of African countries whose democratic journeys are marred by violence, loss of lives, and property,” the statement further reads.

NAP chairperson Benedicto Kondowe, called for prompt and thorough investigations into the violence that occurred in Lilongwe and other recent cases.

Reads the statement: “The perpetrators need to be prosecuted to ensure justice.  Despite the lawful gathering and all necessary approvals obtained for a peaceful parade, thugs affiliated with political parties viciously attacked peaceful citizens, resulting in injuries and damage to property.

“This barbaric behaviour undermines the democratic principles enshrined in our constitutional order and must be unequivocally condemned.”

In an interview yesterday, Malawi Police national spokesperson Peter Kalaya said investigations are already under way and police will ensure that those behind the attacks are arrested.

“We are on the ground investigating the matter,” he said.

DPP members on Saturday gathered at Mbowe Filling Station in Lilongwe for a Blue Convoy Parade activity when they were  attacked by thugs who injured some of the party’s supporters, damaged cars and stole some of the vehicle parts.

DPP accused Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of masterminding the attack, but MCP distanced itself from the violence.
