UTM youths clean up Njamba Park
United Transformation Movement (UTM) youths on Tuesday cleaned up Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre to show that they are responsible and patriotic to the country.
After a mass rally at the park last Sunday, the youths say they noted that the place was left in a mess and being mindful that it is a historical place they agreed to do the cleaning to maintain its dignity.
“This is to show our love and responsibility for the country. One of us was passing by this place (Njamba Park) yesterday and saw that it was in a mess. We know people come here to study, for leisure and to do various activities, however after the rally; the environment was no longer conducive. We are here to maintain the status of this historical place,” explained Aless Banda from the Blantyre UTM interim committee.
Banda said she was impressed with the turnout of the youths from various colleges in Blantyre, businesspersons as well as the working class.
Jaston Bulaula, UTM interim Chairperson for all colleges in the country said he felt obliged to join his colleagues in cleaning up the mess at Njamba to show patriotism.
“We want to show the world that we are responsible and we do things according to our leader Right Honourable Saulos Chilima who has always been teaching us to love our country and take responsibility for our actions,” he said.
After holding rallies in Lilongwe and Blantyre in the central and southern regions respectively, Chilima is this weekend taking the movement to Mzuzu in the Northern Region.
