Wanderers to axe six players

Be Forward Wanderers are set to drop six players as they seek to cut the wage bill and improve the team’s performance following a disappointing season.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, Nomads’ technical director (TD) Jack Chamangwana said the current squad of 31 players is difficult to manage.

“This big squad is a burden to the club’s resources and again it’s not easy to work efficiently with so many players,” he said.

Chamangwana said the clear-out is expected to start once the current season has closed next weekend.

He said they are planning to rest for one month before resuming training in preparation for the next season which is expected to kick off in April.

“Our target is to win the league next season so we want to start preparations early. We hope that by February we will be back in training,” he said.

Chamangwana was appointed TD a month ago while the team was struggling in the Super League despite winning the Carlsberg Cup about five months ago.

Meanwhile, the team has registered a couple of victories which have moved it from position eighth to fifth position within a month.

The technical director attributed the poor season to lack of discipline and deteriorating confidence.

“What I noted was that there was indiscipline among players. They were reporting late for training and conceding unnecessary yellow and red cards but we have changed this,” Chamangwana said. “Secondly, after losing many games, the players’ confidence was low, but I am happy it is back now.”

Wanderers face relegated Airborne Rangers at Chitowe ground in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota on Sunday before winding up their season against Red Lions at Kamuzu Stadium next Thursday.

Wins in both matches could seal their place in the top six and with it automatic qualification into next season’s Standard Bank Cup.
