Welcome us back, IG tells communities

New Inspector General (IG) of Police Lot Dzonzi has pleaded with residents of Chinsapo and Area 24 in Lilongwe to welcome back police officers in their areas because there is no place which can be safe without the police.

Speaking over the weekend when he toured the areas, Dzonzi said he realises that problems that prompted the people to chase away the police officers in the areas can only be solved through contact and dialogue

Police offices in Chinsapo were razed down during the July 20 demonstrations whereas the one in Area 24 was burnt down three months ago by irate residents after police arrested current Minister of Economic Planning and Development Atupele Muluzi for allegedly holding a rally in the area without permission.

Said Dzonzi in his address: “I want you to know that the police has changed. We are not here to arrest you, but to plead with you that our relationship should be cordial and we want to come back and protect you because we are your servants, and not [your] bosses.”

Lilongwe City West Member of Parliament Edwin Bhagwanji commended Dzonzi for taking steps to mend the broken relationships between police and people of Chinsapo and Area 24.

Bhagwanji pledged to build a new police unit at Chinsapo with his personal funds at an estimated cost of K4.5 million.
