Some are called to be pastors, apostles, teachers, prophets and evangelists. But on the Malawian Christianity platform, the name Shadreck Wame rings a bell in minds of many who have followed the revival of Christianity in the country. JAMES CHIMPWEYA had a chat with Wame on his commission.

Who is evangelist Wame?

My name is Shadreck Jonas Wame, a Malawian citizen born in October 1940. I come from Mwanzalamba village, Traditional Authority Kambalame in Salima. I am married with five children, attended a CCAP catechumen class in 1960 and got baptized in 1962 before being ordained a church elder two years later.

How did you become a born again Christian?

While serving as a church elder in 1966, I wanted to become rich and visited a witchdoctor who advised me to go to a graveyard where I would find a small house, with a promise that I would get K10 000. Then I was given a small pillow for protecting my wealth. Although I was a church elder, I was a drunkard and a chain smoker. But I heard a voice, saying what are you doing at the graveyard as a church elder? I had been recording these discussions with the Angel of God. In one of my visions, God showed me a fish carrying a letter addressed to Shadrech Wame, saying this is your glory and ministry from time to time. And this was the start of my evangelistic ministry. I am not a minister or evangelist but a servant of God who works at the revelation of the Holy Spirit. I do what the Spirit of God says to me.

Tell me your encounter when you were involved in an accident.

In 1967, I was involved in accident and in my unconsciousness, I was judged to go to hell for being disobedient before God. The accident happened at Catholic Institute (CI) in Blantyre. I was taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where I spent one and half months.

What is your take on prophetic ministries?

The prophetic ministry should enlighten people of the coming of Jesus Christ according to 1 John 4 and not always talking about prosperity. Most prophets today are busy with the message of prosperity and not salvation which is dangerous to unsaved souls. Prophecy should accompany signs and its fulfillment. There are some fake and self-styled prophets and those that have been sent by God. Those with signs and wonders following them are sent by God but those that speak highly of themselves with prosperity messages are self-styled and fake.

Where has your ministry taken you so far?

I don’t know where I have never gone to minister. I have been everywhere and because of such messages some wanted to honour me with a doctorate degree but I refused. I refused because, the spirit of pride and arrogance could have entered me and made me start boasting that I am Doctor Shadreck Wame which would not be the will of God. One thing is that I wanted to go Parliament to speak to the MPs but I was blocked because I am not educated and they don’t speak vernacular there, but I have a message from God for them.

What is the future of church and the country?

The future of Malawi lies in the hands of God and that of the church. One thing you should know is that it is God himself who is leading Malawi. Those who received Christ walk in the light of God. Hosea 4 verses 6 say ‘My people perish because of lack of knowledge. God is speaking to Malawi leaders both the ruling and the opposition.

We had Cashgate at the Capital Hill, what do you think went wrong?

Cashgate came in because of public officers who lack integrity coupled with their lack of patriotism. Mind you, those involved are mostly officers who are educated not villagers that never went to school. Do we send people to steal from us or to make the country develop? We have educated savages who are doctors and these are the worst savages because they do not fear God and do not have the love of God in them.

How many messages have you preached since you started your ministry?

Some of early messages were not recorded, but those that I recorded are 18. These messages are found wherever I go to minister. I always preach messages from God and before I go anywhere to preach I ask God to give me the message of the place I have been invited to preach at. I normally have a busy schedule sometimes throughout the year. I preach to everybody regardless of religious backgrounds and affiliations. I have been counselling even our friends in Islam and interacting with them freely. n
