The victim, Margaret Stewart, is said to have gone to the health centre in the early hours of Sunday, but was allegedly not welcomed by the nurse on duty for reporting late at the facility.

Mulanje South East legislator Naomi Kilekwa reported the matter through the district council’s WhatsApp group and the district health officer Alinafe Kalanda promised to follow up on the issue through the district health management team.

In an interview, Mulanje district health promotion officer Innocent Chavinda confirmed that the district health management team visited the health centre and verified that the incident took place.

He said the team met and apologised to the area’s traditional leaders who demanded the immediate transfer of the nurse in question.

Said Chavinda: “It is true. We visited the health centre to find out what exactly happened for the woman to deliver outside the hospital and found that our nurse on duty did not give the woman the necessary attention.

“For this reason, the nurse has been sent on forced leave pending hearing by the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi.”

Both the woman and her baby were in good health at the time of compiling this report.
