Women’s national soccer team to go on two-year break

The National Women Football Committee (NWFC) has proposed to FAM that the senior national team should go on a two-year break to embark on a massive rebuilding exercise.

However, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said the proposal will be sent to the next executive committee to determine the way forward.

The development might lead to the national women’s football side not taking part in the regional Cosafa Women’s Championship scheduled for Namibia later this year as well as the CAF Women’s African Championship.

NWFC chairperson Severia Chalira confirmed the news on Monday.

“There has not been any significant improvement in the performance and results of the national team; hence, we have made a proposal to FAM that we should not take part in international tournaments in the next two years,” said Chalira.

She said the first step will be to organise Under-20 tournaments in all the three regions.

But Nyirenda on Monday said the issue will be referred to FAM executive committee.
