Women lawyers hold fresh clinics on GBV in Karonga
Women Lawyers Association (WLA) projects manager Hazel Olithia Miseleni has said clinics on gender-based violence (GBV) in Karonga District will help raise awareness of the problem.
She said women in hard-to-reach areas lack information; hence, there is a rise in unreported GBV cases that need legal guidance and representation.
Miseleni said this at Mbande on Tuesday during one of the legal clinics the association conducted in the district.
She said: “Legal clinics are organised to disseminate information on women’s and girl’s rights and let them understand the laws of Malawi, the importance of reporting GBV cases to relevant authorities, including us through free toll line 3081.
“These legal clinics give us opportunities to disseminate information about the laws in districts with highest cases of child marriages and implement three thematic areas of sexual harassment, GBV and child marriages”.
At the legal clinic, 750 people attended while eight survivors reported possible GBV cases.
In his speech, Paramount Chief Kyungu of Chitipa and Karonga districts warned traditional leaders who tolerate GBV in their areas.
With financial support from Clooney Foundation for Justice, WLA Malawi is carrying out legal clinics nationwide to eradicate GBV cases.
