Xerographics Central Region Under-17 Championship resumes in January after a year’s break.

The sponsors’ managing director Nasser Tayub confirmed the news in an interview on Thursday.

“Yes, we are pleased to sponsor the competition again, but the launch will be in January. We could not do that now because the staff is on holiday, but come January, we will relaunch the trophy. We are always pleased to be associated with football development in the country,” said Tayub.

He could, however, not say like to how much they will pump into the competition.

“We are still working on logistics as on the prize, marketing money and administration money. Once we complete that, I will let you know, but there is no doubt about our commitment to seeing football grow at grass roots,” said Tayub.

Central Region Youth Football Committee chairperson Rodrick Longwe welcomed the development.

“Xerographics is the only company targeting Under-17 football. We were dealt a big blow when they failed to sponsor the league this year. But now that they are back, we are grateful to Mr. Tayub. They make a big difference to grass roots football,” said Longwe.

He said his committee has already submitted it budget of K5.5 million (about $19 000) to the sponsors.

“They (Xerographics) are still scrutinising the budget, but they have given us a green light to start putting structures in place for the tournament,” said Longwe.

Last year, Xerographics sponsored the league to the tune of K1.5 million (about $4 545). The league is played at district level then advances to regional finals.

In the previous competition, all nine district champions received a set of uniforms from Xerographics.
