About 60 youths yesterday cleaned the cluttered surroundings of Chichiri International Conference Centre (Comesa Hall) in Blantyre as one way of keeping the environment along the Masauko Chipembere Highway clean.

The group, under the banner of Friends of APM, collected the debris, swept the grounds of Comesa Hall, Judiciary and Southern Region Police Headquarters where they also slashed grass.

The area was last week littered when thousands of people escorted their presidential candidates to present nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) ahead of the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

One of the event’s organisers, Jack Mavutula, said they cleaned the surroundings after noting the mess that was left behind by people during the five-day event.

He said: “This is an open place. Its ambience needs to be unpolluted throughout. That is why we decided to clean it. In addition, this is also in line with our First Lady Gertrude Mutharika’s initiative of keeping our surroundings clean through the Beautify Malawi campain [Beam].”

A small-scale trader at Chichiri Trade Fair grounds, Wyness Banda, commended the youth for sparing time to clean the surroundings.

Thousands of people, especially from the Southern and Eastern regions, converged at Comesa Hall from Monday to Friday last week to support their presidential candidates.
