Zembani Band celebrates Lucius

Salima residents on Saturday demonstrated their continued affection for fallen music icon ‘soldier’ Lucius Banda’s songs when they patronised Zembani Band’s memorial performance.

This was the fourth show after the death of Lucius on June 30 2024 in South Africa.

First on line of Banda’s songs was Mzimu wa Soldier which, with lead vocalist Jonny Zembani Banda, Lucius’ son, taking centre stage, sent the audience into a frenzy.

It was a fitting memorial for Lucius who was a household name.

Another Lucius song, Njoka mu udzu, was highly appreciated by people who asked for more. Kupupuluma, which counsels children to obey elders, came next.

The band then played Nthawi. Thereafter, the audience was given a chance to choose a song and they settled for Mabala from his first album Son of the Poor Man.

Jonny thanked the patrons for their support.

He said: “Ever since I started performing alongside my father, we have never had an audience as big as the one we had today. I am surprised.

“There were moments when I shed tears and wished he was with us today. But I know he’s watching.”

Jonny promised to continue the mission so that the band moves on. He disclosed that the band has roped in new talent such as Joe Kells.

During the show, Sam Simakweli sang Sophia and Ndimasilira while Nepman entertained the audience with Ndidikireko
