Aphysically challenged primary school teacher, Chrissy Chaima, on Wednesday received a wheelchair and K100 000 (about $250) during MBC’s Zokonda Amayi get-together at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre.

Lab Enterprises donated the wheelchair through Zokonda Amayi while a viewer from Lilongwe, who was watching the event live on MBCTV Miriam Mathinga, pleged to give Chaima MK100 000.

It was all smiles for Chaima, a teacher at Ntambanyama in Thyolo, who has been crawling since her wheelchair broke some years ago.

“I did not expect that this would happen. I had problems walking from one place to another, especially during the rainy season. Thanks to Lab Enterprises for the wheelchair and Zokonda Amayi for giving me the chance to be here,” she said.

Zokonda Amayi’s presenter Gloria Banda, said the event was organised to thank women for their support.

“The event has been specially made this year to give chance to women to interact with each other face to face. We also unveil 30 clubs which the women were told to form after last year’s meeting,” said Banda.

The meeting brought together 120 women from 30 Zokonda Amayi clubs in all the 28 districts of the country. This year’s event came under the theme Women, the Foundation of National Development.

During the event, raffle draws saw a number of women winning Candlex hampers, Azam Green Soap, Azam T-shirts, Universal Industries hampers, Axa Bus Service tickets, accommodation for two at any Sunbird hotel and dinner for two at Mount Soche’s Picasso Restaurant.

MBC director general Benson Tembo urged telecommunication service providers to take advantage of Zokonda Amayi, saying it is evident that many women make calls to the programme.

Chief Justice Annastanzia Msosa was guest of honour at the event which was spiced with live performances by Ethel Kamwendo Banda and Lloyd Phiri.
