Senior Group Village Headman Chimbalanga from Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba has called on government to quickly provide relief food so that people in the area are saved from dying of hunger.

Speaking on Wednesday during Save the Children’s Numeracy Boost interface meeting with chiefs and communities, Chimbalanga said over 4, 000 people from his 21 villages urgently need food assistance.

Said Chimbalanga:“My area was devastated by floods in the last rainy season and we never harvested enough. People are desperate and if government and other well wishers do not come in to assist us quickly, many people will die.”

He added that many of his subjects are surviving on mangoes and “worse still the only Admarc market we have at Nayuchi has not been selling maize for months.”

Headmaster for Nanjiwa Primary school Emmanuel Kajiya said there could be more school drop outs when the mango season elapses, as people will have nothing to eat.

Save the Children Numeracy Boost Officer Vincent Thauzeni said the floods had a negative impact on the project which is aimed at enhancing learners’ passion in mathematics as some schools were closed while some were used as shelters for flood victims.

“During the meeting, we observed that we have a lot of women in the system than men and it’s because men are busy looking for peace works to find money for food,” said Thauzeni.
