Zomba City Council (ZCC) deputy mayor Davie Maunde says grassroots football teams need support to nurture their talent.

Maunde (R) presents a symbolical jersey to Makwera

The  deputy mayor said this  on Friday when he donated a set of football uniform each to Chinamwali Football Club (FC) for finishing this season’s First Capital Bank Under-20 national tournament on position three and Chinamwali Stars for being outstanding in the district’s tournaments.

Maunde, who is councillor for Chinamwali Ward, bought the sets of uniform at K1.1 million.

“The sets of uniform are meant to inspire these youthful players to be dedicated and become prolific soccer players within and beyond the [Malawi] borders,” he said.

Receiving the set of uniform on behalf of his team, Chinamwali FC captain Chikondi Brown said the jerseys would encourage them to work hard next year.

“The donation has shown that soccer lovers follow our performances, therefore, it has challenged us to work hard to win more trophies next year,” he said.

Chinamwali Stars team manager Arthur Makwera said the donation was timely as it would help them to work hard to produce a Super League team from Zomba City following the relegation of Red Lions.

“We are focused on investing in youth football for the development of sports in the country,” he said.
