Zomba Lions commission solar project

Chamba Health Centre in Traditional Authority Mwambo, Zomba, got a timely boost on Friday when the Zomba Lions Club commissioned solar power to the health facility’s maternity wing.

The initiative was part of the club’s projects being implemented in some parts of the district.

Speaking during the ceremony, Zomba Lions Club president Edward Mbesa said the initiative was sought after getting reports that cases of deliveries at night are on the increase at the health facility.

“We were saddened to learn that deliveries at night were being done using candle light which we believe is not conducive. We decided to come in and assist with this solar system valued at K242 000 [about $968]. This is one way of complementing government’s efforts to safe motherhood,” he said.

In his remarks, Zomba district health officer Medson Semba hailed Zomba Lions Club for the timely gesture.

He said the solar lighting will go a long way in assisting the health workers during deliveries, thereby contributing to the good health of the mothers in the surrounding communities.
