In a bid to inspire Zomba United to cause a major upset in the Carlsberg Cup final, Zomba City Mayor Joana Ntaja has pledged to reward the team.

The old capital-based outfit faces the People’s Team this Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre what has been dubbed a David versus Goliath affair.

“We want them to know and appreciate that we are behind them. The whole of Zomba is behind them.

“I urge all residents of Zomba to support the team. We are planning on how to motivate the players and each goal will go with a certain amount. They are our pride. It will be great if they win the cup,” said the country’s only female mayor.

The team’s coach, Alinafe Noel Gobede, said they have intensified their preparations for the final showdown.

Bullets chairperson Kondi Msungama said they are looking forward to the finale just like any other game.

“Of course, being a final match we are considering a slight increase in the players’ 40 percent cut from the prize money if we win. There are also a lot of pledges coming up from individuals, but we do not want that to divert the players attention,” said Msungama.

He also ruled out any possibility of going into camp, but was quick to say: “That does not mean we are underrating our opponents. For them to reach this far, it means they are a good side. We are treating them with utmost respect, but they can’t strike fear in us.”
