Zomba-Ntonya aspirants sign social contract

Aspirant parliamentarians and councillors in Zomba-Ntonya Constituency have vowed to work with local governance structures in order to steer development in the area.

The aspirants made the commitment on Friday during a public debate held at St Peter’s Parish in Senior Chief Chikowi’s area.

The candidates noted that negligence and politics play a leading role in making the area lag behind in development.

“We should develop this area together after elections irrespective of our different political affiliations. For instance, we need to ask the winning candidates to exert pressure on government to consider upgrading Lambulira Health Centre to a rural hospital and construct bridges,” said UDF aspiring member of Parliament Nedson Poya.

In her remarks, Senior Chief Chikowi appealed for peaceful coexistence before, during and after the elections.

“Let me condemn what happened in the area last week when some supporters of political parties clashed. Those who will emerge winners during the elections should celebrate peacefully and the losers should gracefully accept defeat,” Chikowi said.

At the end of the debate, aspirants signed a social contract as one way of committing themselves to fulfilling what was deliberated when elected.

The debate was organised by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) of Zomba Diocese.
