Board warns judges, referees on ethics

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has warned local boxing judges and referees wishing to be considered for training early March that they risk having their licences revoked if they work with the Malawi Boxing Association (Maba).

MPBCB president Lonzoe Zimba said Wednesday that this is the reason interested judges and referees have to apply and indicate their allegiance to professional boxing.

Masamba_mchomboThe Southern and Central regions are expected to have five successful candidates for the training while the Northern Region will usher in four individuals. The course will be facilitated by a Zambian professional boxing instructor.

“All those that will be invited for the forthcoming course should be willing to permanently work under the MPBCB. Anyone who will defy this order to get involved in amateur boxing will have his or her professional boxing licence revoked,” said Zimba.

“We do not want individuals that will serve two masters. They should either work with us or permanently shift to the other body. We need discipline in our fold.”

MPBCB was previously an affiliate of Maba, but it became an independent boxing body in the country after the International Amateur Boxing Association (Aiba) recently ordered the seceding of the board from Maba through the Sports Council.

Aiba argued that Maba is supposed to deal with amateur boxing while professional boxing has to be handled by a separate entity.
