Kalonga Gawa Undi—the paramount chief of the Chewa people in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia—has secured K4 million from the US-based New Skin Force for Good Foundation for the procurement and distribution of relief items for flood victims in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts, the Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) has disclosed.

Chefo chairperson, Professor Kanyama Phiri, said Gawa Undi was “very concerned” with the tragedy that hit Malawi, resulting in loss of lives, property and a huge hectarage of crops.

Phiri made the remarks when the foundation donated relief items to flood victims at Bereu Evacuation Centre in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Lundu in Chikwawa and Mgona Camp in T/A Tengani in Nsanje on Saturday.

“As a caring parent, Kalonga Gawa Undi felt duty-bound to contribute to efforts aimed at alleviating pain among flood victims. Hence, he mobilised financial resources from Skin Force for Good Foundation which we’ve used to procure the relief items we’re donating today,” he said.

Paramount Chief Lundu thanked Chefo for the donation, which he said was the first [donation] since Bereu Evacuation Centre was opened last week following the heavy downpour last Wednesday.

The downpour resulted in flooding of rivers in Chikwawa where two lives—a father and son—were lost.
