The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has expressed concern over increased cases of mob justice and other murders in Mulanje District in the past few months.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting organised to address security concerns on Wednesday, Mulanje Nice programmes officer Boniface Phiri said at least 11 murder incidents occurred in the District in the past two months.

He said Senior Chief Chikumbu’s area registered most of the reported incidents while Group village head (GVH) Gulumba recorded six cases.

Said Phiri: “I must state from the outset that arbitrary loss of life constitutes grave violation of the right to life.

Phiri: The situation is becoming untenable

“In the area under focus, people are killing each other willy-nilly over money and marital differences, among others, and the situation is becoming untenable.”

He then urged authorities to act quickly and apprehend all perpetrators.

The area’s community policing forum coordinator Jackson Ligomeka concurred with Phiri, adding that in the past weeks, a woman was brutally killed by her son and two young men were found dead and dumped along two different roads in the same area.

In her remarks, Annie Mambiya, a resident civic educator for the area, called for cohesion and review of the judicial system and enhanced mass civic education to deal with the problem.

GVH Gulumba appealed to people to always give dialogue a chance whenever misunderstandings arise.

The meeting drew participants from Malawi Police Service, community development structures, civil society organisations (CSOs) and religious leaders, among others.

Nice held the meeting with funding from the European Union under Boma Lathu Project
